Workshop
Convening at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, the Forum will bring together religious leaders and scholars for discussions on the role of religion in mediating conflicts, the meaning of a “universal vocation” in an illiberal age, and global Catholicism’s relationship to the Holy Land.

Role of Language in the Conflict (2/2)

Second of two
This workshop was the second in a series examining the role of language in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Building on the first workshop, participants examined how contested terminology shapes political imagination, dialogue, and prospects for peace, while exploring ways to transform language into a tool for trust-building and hope. The workshop also advanced collaborative initiatives, while reaffirming the Church’s role in fostering dialogue grounded in human dignity and moral leadership.

Early Christian Perspectives on the Holy Land

This roundtable sought to articulate a distinctly Catholic vision of the Holy Land rooted in theology, history, and the lived experience of the Church of Jerusalem. Drawing on early Christian perspectives, participants explored the theological significance of the Land, the vocation of Jerusalem as the Mother Church, and the relationship between biblical tradition and contemporary realities. The discussion identified key themes for further development, laying the groundwork for a broader theological framework that can guide the Church’s witness in the Holy Land and its engagement with the universal Church.

This workshop was the first in a series examining the role of language in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Participants explored how language shapes perceptions, identities, and relationships, while considering how the Church might develop a vocabulary that is both morally clear and capable of fostering dialogue between different communities. The discussions emphasized the need to de-weaponize contested terms and cultivate forms of discourse that promote human dignity, empathy, and hope.

The discussions highlighted the diversity of opinion within Israeli society while contributing to a broader understanding of the conflict and the potential role of the Church in fostering dialogue.
